How to Settle Custody Disputes
Parental responsibility is something that continues even after you are divorced. Most parents do so without outside aid, but some do need a bit of help to do so. There is no shame in this, but you do need to realize that benefits and drawbacks of how you might proceed.
How to Settle Custody Disputes
If you are in a particularly contentious divorce, settling custody disputes is possibly most easily done in the court. You might have very different expectations for your child’s care, and thus might need the help of the experts of the court to decide what to do. The Court is usually a place of last resort, but it does create legally binding solutions for your problems. This does little to solve the issues which caused the problems in the first place, though, and it will not stop further issues from cropping up.
Mediation
Mediation is a process by which the parents can work out a solution to their problems with the help of a neutral third party. This is a rather common part of divorces that involve children in Toronto, and a good way for parents to hash out their differences without involving the courts. Mediation can be very difficult (if not impossible) in instances that involve spousal abuse, though, and underlying problems may not necessarily be solved by those who are not willing to buy into the process.
Family Counseling
Counseling is a good solution for families looking for longterm solutions. Counseling takes quite a bit of time, allowing the family to work out problems at a pace that is more reasonable than some of the other methods. Counseling does, however, require the full participation of the family. This is a great way for many to work on settling custody disputes, however, because it allows the individuals to work out problems with the counselors and with one another. It should be noted, though, that counseling can be a very long process as well as one that is very expensive.
Working With a Coordinator
A parenting coordinator is an individual who is appointed for a specific length of time to help a family resolve its problems. The coordinator will largely help the family to solve its own problems, though it will impose a solution if the family cannot do so on its own. This is technically a court-based solution, with stricter terms than mediation or counseling.
