Know These Trial Seperation Stats Before You Try One
Are you considering a trial separation because you believe that you and your spouse need some time apart? Do you think it might make your marriage stronger in the end? Read on to learn more about the research regarding trial separations and their effectiveness.
The Cold, Hard Numbers
Researchers focusing on relationships have studied how well trial separations work. The results, as it turns out, are a mixed bag.
According to a study published in the Journal of Marriage and Family, 10% of couples in ongoing marriages have separated and then reunited. The same study suggests that one third of these reconciliations succeed.
The Anecdotal Evidence
There are some professionals who don’t put much stock in this research. Lawyers fall into this group.
The reason members of the legal profession take a dim view of trial separations is because there are no hard and fast rules. Trial separations can last a week, a month, a year… And if one party decides to leave the home, it can create legal difficulties if he or she wants to go back to living there.
Mental health professionals, conversely, have been known to endorse trial separations. In an article in The Independent, British relationship psychologist Susan Quilliam noted that her advice varies from couple to couple. She added that seeking counseling from a trained mental health professional can help spouses make a better decision.
Quilliam made it clear in the article that the couple should establish ground rules, including how long the separation will last, whether one party moves out and if the spouses are allowed to see other people during that time. She stressed that clear communication will make the process easier for all involved (even if it doesn’t lead to reconciliation). Furthermore, Quilliam urged couples to discuss what changes they need to make in order to make the relationship work as well as getting to the root of what’s causing the problems in the first place.
